Mean time to repair (MTTR)
Mean time to repair is how long it takes, on average, to get a piece of equipment running again from the moment the fault is detected. It is known by its English acronym, MTTR, and it is the flip side of asset availability.
It includes everything that happens between the fault and the fix: detecting, diagnosing, sourcing the spare part, arriving and repairing. When it rises, the most frequent cause is not the repair itself but waiting for a part that was not where it should have been.
It is read alongside mean time between failures: a low MTTR with very frequent failures describes an operation that puts out fires quickly, not one that works well. The combination of the two is what tells you whether to repair or replace a machine.
