Last mile
The last mile is the final stretch of the delivery: from the last distribution centre to the recipient door. It is the most expensive of the whole chain and the only one the customer sees, so it concentrates both the cost and the perception.
Its cost is driven up by failed attempts: every delivery that does not go through is paid for twice and sometimes three times. That is why the tools that improve it most are not routing tools but communication ones — announcing the arrival window and allowing rescheduling before departure.
In Latin American cities it adds two problems of its own: imprecise addresses and traffic restrictions. The first is fixed by capturing the real location on the first successful delivery; the second, by building it into the planning.
