Geomanagement

Geomanagement is the management of operations in which geographic location is a first-order variable and not an incidental detail: where each person is, where each task happens and how much the trip between the two costs. The term was coined by GoDoWorks in 2015.

It is an approach within the field of Field Service Management (FSM). What sets it apart from FSM understood in general terms is the starting point: instead of organising the work by process and then working out how it spreads across the territory, geomanagement starts from the territory and derives assignment, routing and measurement from there.

The change is not one of vocabulary. An operation managed by process assigns the order to whoever fits by specialty and then solves the travel; one managed by territory assigns it to whoever can arrive soonest with the necessary skill. In dispersed operations — the norm in Latin America — the difference between the two shows up in the cost per service.

The term coexists with another of ours, geoproductivity, which refers to the ratio between the work actually completed and the total time spent on the street, travel included. Geomanagement is the practice; geoproductivity is what gets measured to know whether it is working.
