Corrective maintenance
Corrective maintenance is the intervention performed once the equipment has already failed. It is unavoidable — no operation eliminates it — but its share of the total says a good deal about how well planned asset management is.
It costs more than preventive work for three compounding reasons: the stoppage is unplanned, the spare part is rarely available and the urgency pays for overtime or special trips. A corrective job usually costs between two and four times the equivalent preventive one.
Logging it against the equipment and not only against the date is what lets patterns appear: which machines concentrate the failures, which repeat the same one and which already cost more in repairs than replacing them would.
A well-logged corrective job also feeds the preventive plan: if the same failure shows up on several machines of the same model, the plan interval was miscalculated and it is worth shortening it before it repeats across the rest of the fleet.
