BPM (Business Process Management)
BPM is the discipline of modelling, automating and improving an organisation processes explicitly: what steps each process has, who performs each one, what rules trigger them and what evidence they leave behind.
What it adds over solving each process with custom development is that the process stays visible and editable. When a regulation or a policy changes, you edit the flow instead of requesting development work, and the instances already running keep the version they started with.
Its operational value shows up in measurement: since every step is recorded with its duration, you can see where work piles up. That is the information that lets you improve with data rather than with the impression of whoever complains loudest.
