The seventh edition of the Smart Cities Meeting, promoted by the Department of Sustainable and Smart Development of the Municipality of Montevideo, was held. This space is a meeting for cooperation and exchange based on technology and public management.
This year's slogan was based on "Public Innovation for Sustainable Development" and brought together the technological ecosystem of the city and the region, where different local and international panelists presented their experiences related to original and intelligent solutions and how they contributed value to cities and, above all, to citizens.
The Director of the Public Spaces and Buildings Division of the Municipality of Montevideo, Architect Martin Delgado, gave a presentation on the ABC Sidewalks Program and the technological tools developed to meet the objectives of the project aimed at repairing sidewalks in the city of Montevideo and working together with citizens, in pursuit of transparency and collaboration.
Director of the Division of Public Spaces and Buildings of the Municipality of Montevideo, Architect Martín Delgado spoke about the ABC Sidewalks Program and the innovative tools developed to achieve the objectives of this plan for the massive repair of sidewalks in Montevideo.
One of the main challenges faced by the Program is the volume of sidewalks in need of repair. The survey carried out with the help of the geomatics service was able to develop a cartography that revealed the surface coverage of consolidated sidewalks in Montevideo is approximately 7 million square meters of paved sidewalks, of which 25% require repair.
This situation affects the urban quality of one of the main living spaces, causing problems of accessibility, cleanliness and safety.
Other major challenges facing the program include:
- How to centralize the survey information to make it operational?
- How to manage the registration of neighbors?
- How to monitor the works?
- How to communicate the results to neighbors?
The solution proposed by the Municipality of Montevideo was to be scalable to the 140,000 residents with sidewalks in the city.
Solution to the main challenges: geo-management software

To achieve the objectives, the program adopted the GoDoWorks geomanagement tool to carry out the survey of sidewalks in the first phase of the program. The surveyors went out to the streets equipped with tablets and went through the 4 zones and completed the survey of the 140 thousand census lists.
Delgado emphasized that the work could be carried out in an agile manner thanks to the application of GoDoWorks software, adapted to the needs of the program.
GoDoWorks not only allowed the surveyors to generate and complete a form with on-site data and upload photographs of the sidewalks in an orderly fashion, but also to create an interface that neighbors can view.
Delgado also emphasized the benefit of GDW for the real-time monitoring of the survey and the possibility of identifying each of the technicians as they carried out their work.

From the database generated, it was possible to provide individualized information to neighbors and generate a series of maps that can be used for future programs and initiatives.
GDW also presented the benefit of providing performance evaluation, information linkable to other applications and being a scalable solution.
In this way, GoDoWorks deepens its position as a key technological solution for the development of smart cities.
